As I often do when in a blank area – not knowing what to do with the week’s FSO topic, I Google it. Somewhere within all the thousands pages that come from a Google search is usually a word or a phrase that sparks my interest and clarifies the topic for me. First a definition of Macro photography – “…The classical definition is that the image projected is close to the same size as the subject….” and a search of ‘URBAN MACRO’ rewarded me with a complete group of photos on flickr.com. The clincher for me was visiting Pauline’s site – now I had the idea and went hunting in my archives for photos that might work.
All of these photos are from the Nova Friburgo area.
Ever seen the flower of a Banana Tree? Not Urban but forest – but very much a part of the surrounding area where banana trees (well more of a bush) grown wild in the forest.
Oooh. Gorgeous flowers or fruits. I'm sorry I missed this shoot but did last weeks shoot. I've learned alot about being disoriented this week.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of the banana tree. In Asia, those yellow flowers and the purple heart are edible, and is used in cooking. Even the banana leaves are used in wrapping food and steamed, baked, grill....it gives such beautiful aroma.
ReplyDeleteI love the purple in that first shot.
ReplyDeleteYay, Ginger. Glad to be of help. I'm like that, people often see what I do, then know what they have to do (which is usually the opposite of what I've done!)
ReplyDeleteLove your fence posts and baskets! All of them, in fact!
I love it when I think a topic is beyond me and then I come up with something. It's a real feeling of accomplishment, isn't it?
These are all awesome! But that banana flower is exceptional!
ReplyDeleteNever seen the flower of a Banana Tree before. It's quite a stunner!
ReplyDeleteLove that first shot too.
Lovely shots...very creative and the flowering banana photo is spectacular. Love the color.
ReplyDeleteOh they are beautiful...everyone! I love the first two especially!! Wow...I never saw a banana flower..beautiful!
ReplyDeletethose purple flowers, did they grow there?
ReplyDeleteDo you know that banana flowers can be eaten two ways?
When I was young in my grand dad's place, we used to suck those yellow flowerlets. Grand pa wasn't happy.
Some Burmese , Thai Vietnamese , they cook the heart , you know , the purple bulb? In Singapore, with my trees, I used to give the banana heart to my friends.
Wonder of the Brazilians eat them?
Answer to your question: the purple heart are stewed in coconut milk and spices, while the tiny flowers are dried and added to soup. But these are not very popular here .The heart are quiet difficult to find here in the market and no many people know how to eat them.
ReplyDeleteAnn - the flowere petals are from a large bougainvillea TREE (not vine)that grows just above this littel shack. terra cotta tiles are so common here I thought they represented our urban landscape. teh purple made for nice color.
ReplyDeleteawesome series GingerV! I have never seen the banana tree flower either. very unique, as is the banana tree itself.
ReplyDeleteanother best FSo theme post GingerV! That flower of the banana tree attracts my attention primarily. I also have photos like that but your shot is so amazing. I look at it more than a flower of the banana. so unique
