On Saturday we spent the 4th of July - Missouri City Texas style. I know all across America small towns were celebrating in the almost exact same way, but for me it was the last big American style blast before returning to Brazil. In the middle of the very hot afternoon we had a group of friends and family eating hamburgers from the grill, corn on the cob, potato chips, lots of summer fruits and sodas. This year I didn’t make potato salad, I just couldn’t work up the enthusiasm it would take to be boiling eggs and potatoes an already hot kitchen. No matter how good your AC it can’t keep up with temperatures over 100 and a heat index (factor in high humidity) of 105-110. So what wouldn’t cook on the grill got substituted for with cold ready to serve foods.
After eating, a group of the younger friends took chairs and fishing poles over to the park and us older …. well the older ones stayed in the AC until about 7, then joined them at the park with the soft drinks, water and more food, to watch the sun go down and to wait for the fireworks. I sat for about 15 minutes with the fishing pole group then took my camera and walked around the lake to where I could here the music – just to see what was happening…
The Missouri City recreational dept. had a live band (Tejano music!), rock climbing, 2 bungee swings, break dancing display, and of course lots food and beverage kiosks. [I was surprised because if you wanted to come into the park you couldn’t bring your own food and drink, had to buy from the city]
I returned to the young people, who hadn’t moved the whole time I was gone, just in time to see the sun go down – then 15 minutes later the fireworks began…. Loved it -
Tomorrow we travel – that means at least two days offline. Hope to have a ‘My town Friday Shoot-out’ from Rio this week. See you then.

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, your telling of how your 4th of July went reminded me so much of the summers I used to spend in IL with my dad's family when I was a kid, and 4th of July was spent with a big extended family down at the lake house. I used to love it, and could not get enough of the fun, good food, loud laughter and conversation of the adults, and just the feeling of the hot summer pressing in on us. Fishing at the lake was a must, and I was right in the middle of it all, tom boy that I was. Thanks for sharing the story of all your fun, of your one last blast American style before returning to Brazil!! It has been a long time since I was able to spend more then just one week in the states visiting, so I have been enjoying hearing about your time over there, as seen thru the eyes of an american who lives else where. ciao from here, Debby
