My Town Friday Shoot-out – Weather during the Christmas season

If you Google for weather in Nova Friburgo, you will find that this is not the best time to visit. For me it is not Christmassy in the least. There is not much variation in the temperatures nor in the amount of rain each day. The Chart below is about Nova Friburgo proper, up at our house at a 1000 meter or 3000 feet, the temperatures are about 3 degrees cooler and the rain much heavier/fog more constant.

You can wake to the sound of rain, go to bed at night to the sound of rain and thunder and when not fully raining there is mist in the air that leaves trees and flowers covered in moisture. Dripping endlessly. The average rainfall for the months of November, December and January are 6.7, 9.4 and 8.2 inches respectively for a total of more than 50 inches a year. The Rainy Season = the Christmas season.

All this humidity brings swollen rivers and mud slides.  If a road is going to collapse it will be at Christmas time. One year when we were up here visiting from the States for Christmas, we drove into Friburgo for supplies the day after and found the city covered in about a foot of mud. The river that runs through central filled with a mud slide up in the hills and barreled down through town overflowing the banks, inundating the whole town.

The advantage is when the sun is out the colors of the forest is GREEN and the colors of the flowers vibrant.

  1. Ginger, your flower photos take my breath away.

When it rains in Las Vegas for more than 30 minutes, you can bet that we will have flooding somewhere. It's terrible. The water doesn't soak into the hard desert ground very well.

It sounds like you have wonderful weather forecasst this time of year. I love being warm. I'm not much for cold weather.

  6. Oooh, I am a sucker for clouds and mountains, but we had so little of either one this week. The weather in Brasil this time of year...I guess I would miss the northern climes quite a bit. Doesn't seem like December without some cold weather and a little snow. Still, the lush vegetation and those beautiful flowers make up for an awful lot!

  8. Gotta have all the rain so everything is tropical green year around, but it sure can be a pain.
    The price we pay.

I think we will see the Sun today here in Goiania for the first time this week.

We've been a Seattle without the Starbucks.

  10. Many of your shots should be in National Geographic. The first and last three were fabulous.

  11. I agree with Gordon. Particularly the thick white fog clouds settled in the valley at the end.

  12. The photos are just breathtaking. Although I imagine shopping in a foot of mud does not get one in the Christmas spirit.

I agree with expat and Gordon, your photos are definitely publishable.

  19. Such a beautiful place you live in. I can deal with 1000, meters (but when I get up to 2,000, things get dicey) -- and 23 degrees is Just Right. The mudslides, now -- I guess every silver lining has its cloud, but mudslides sound scary.
