The Injured Owl

In Muri there is a small Veterinary clinic. The veterinarian, a young woman, collects stray dogs and helps local people find homes for extra puppies. We go into the yard often and see what puppies are being given (sold!) away. Last week while there, a couple Bombeiros (firemen) brought in a box. They were holding it with extreme caution. Finally the contents were transferred to a cage and I got to stick my head in the room to see. It was an owl with a broken wing. It had been hit by a car on the road to Friburgo. The owl was hissing and clicking its beak in warning to an assistant that got too close, but I was able to snap a couple of shots…. What a beautiful and elegant creature. He (she?) would turn his head towards me and exam what I was doing but showed no fear of me, just curiosity. I will try to get by again today to see how the wing repair is going and give you an update…

  3. Hey Reggie Girl. What 'cha doing in Brazil?

I so hope the owl does OK. Like Reggie girl, I love animals. Let me know, too.

I will use this post for my confession. Last week, when I was coming home from an assignment (in the dark) a little rabbt ran out in front of me. He did one of those zig-zaggy dances, and I did not know which way to go. I hit him, and I knew he was dead, but I went back to tell him I was sorry.

I cried all the way home, and I still feel so bad that I took his little life.

On a lighter note, I can't tell you how many chickens I have saved that have fallen off trucks. I once saved a turtle in the road who was going to be turtle soup. I dared this big burly man to take him before I got to him.

Once I wrangled an injured possum (he had been run over - not by me) into my Volkswagen, and woke up my vet in the middle of the night to save him.

He did what he could, and I took the possum home and wrapped his tail around the bathroom door and closed it. He was so funny hanging on that door. He lived in our bathroom for a week, and we were able to release him into the woods.

  4. What a beautiful creature. I hope they can repair the wing. The owl has beautiful amber eyes that remind me of one of our cats, Stutzie. You can see her eyes at: http://proartz.blogspot.com/2009/01/cat-tale-2-chasing-mice-cubes.html
